Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in the Claude 5.5 family, as an upgrade to Sonnet 5. The update claims more than 30% faster output and reduced costs per task due to token efficiency, with unchanged per-token pricing. Sonnet 5.5 is positioned for well-scoped, everyday tasks (bug fixes, documents, slides, spreadsheets, design) and is available across Claude platforms and major cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure). Opus 5.5 remains the recommended option for complex, open-ended tasks requiring sustained judgment. New cyber safeguards, fallback behavior for riskier requests, and biology safeguards are highlighted, with attempt to preserve routine software development work. The release rounds out Anthropic’s Sonnet lineup, offering a faster, cheaper option for common workloads, while Haiku 5.5 is anticipated soon to extend the family.
